The famous Paradise Beach Resort and Casino along the gold coast of the north’s Playa Dorada Complex has commenced their extensive renovation process. The Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mr Antonio Herrera said that the hotel will be closing its doors to the public on Tuesday may 6th 2008 until renovations are complete. Paradise Beach Resort and Casino is located right on the beach front of Playa Dorada on the northern side of the Dominican Republic and has been a firm favourite for many repeating holiday guests over the last 10 years.
Sunday saw the first direct flight from Moscow into Punta Cana International Airport on the east side of the Dominican Republic. A Russian Boeing 747-400 from the Transaero Airline flew a distance of 11,000 kilometers and flying for 12 hours non stop. The massive two story jets can carry a total of 352 passengers with 11 in first class where seats can turn into beds, 56 in business class and 285 in economy. The aircraft will join the Russian fleet of 29 planes. The representative in the Dominican Republic for Trasaero is Ruscan Pirogov who said that flight days from Russia are Thursday and Sunday.
Dominican Republic’s Ministry of tourism has announced that the Santo Domingo’s Merengue Festival is to take place from July 24th to July 27th 2008. The programme this year has a packed line up of stars according to the organizers billing, which includes, Tono Rosario, India Canela and Kinito Mendez appearing July 24th, Fernando Villalona, Kico el Presidente and Banda Gorda appearing July 25th, Pochy Familia and The Coco Band, Querubanda and Eddy Herrera July 26th with Sergio Vargas, Giovanny Planco and El Torito appearing on July 27th.
Rafael Sanchez who is the General Manager for American Airlines in the Dominican Republic has said the airline won’t apply the $US25 fee on a second suitcase charge, as other carriers have already announced. Mr Sanchez said American Airlines is not cutting its flights to the Dominican Republic despite the high cost of operations which have resulted in the increase of aircraft fuel. He continued to add “American Airlines will continue its policy of allowing suitcases per passenger with a weight of 50 pounds each...continued...
Speaking from the United Nations agency regional public information officer Alejandro Lopez announced to press that the World Food Program lacks crucially needed funds to assist and feed Haiti’s poor and that international donors must provide urgent and massive aid. He continued to say “the situation is particularly serious because fifty six percent of the Haitian population is already living with less than one dollar a day. We do not have enough food to face the demand and we will need even more funds than what already has been requested.”

The latest figures are in from the Dominican Tourist Board and show that tourism has grown from March of 2007. With 1.1 million people arriving this first quarter means a growth of 5.9% on last March. Tourists from Canada and the US grew 9% and 7.4% respectively whilst tourists coming from Spain, Belgium and England increased too. Tourists from new countries are also making up high arrival figures from Russia, Ecuador and Peru. All in all 389,075 tourists arrived by air during March to the Dominican Republic's fair shores to enjoy a vacation in the sunshine.
