Santo Domingo Leones Win Revered Dominican Baseball Crown
In a thrilling final game with the scores tied at 4-4 in a best of 9 game final, The Santo Domingo Leones clinched victory over arch rivals The Aguila's of Santiago. The Aguila's managed to take an early lead and looked like they might win the final match, but with home soil advantage The Leones managed to muster all their strength in a thrilling comeback that takes them to represent The Dominican Republic in The Caribbean series.
Leones 4 Las Aguilas 3, Big Game Today!
After a thrilling match in Santo Domingo, game 7 saw The Leones from Santo Domingo claim victory on home soil and needing one more win for victory in the national baseball championship. The Aguilas from Santiago must win today to level the match to 4-4 which would leave one final game tomorrow to decide once and for all. No strangers to coming back from behind, Las Aguilas should be favorite to win on home turf today and hopefully set up the final game. Either way and regardless of what happens, this evening should be a thrilling game with everything to play for. For Baseball Fans on Vacation in The Dominican Republic
If you are a baseball fan and you're currently on vacation in The Dominican Republic, you're in for a treat. Right at this moment two teams are battling it out for the Dominican baseball championship. The two teams are The Aguilas from Santiago and The Leones from Santo Domingo. In a best of 9 final, The Leones stormed into a 3 game lead, however The Aguilas who just don't give up have leveled to 3 all. With just one of the teams requiring two games to claim the championship tensions throughout the island is high as each of the teams supporters gather en masse at local sports bars, supermarkets, colmados and basically wherever there is a TV close to a bar. The atmosphere is electric as the Dominican people take their baseball very seriously, so find a safe drinking hole and join in the fun. The final games are scheduled for today, Saturday 28th January, Sunday 29th January and Monday 30th January if still tied after Sunday.
Dominicans Enjoy a Long Weekend to Celebrate the 199th Birthday of it's Founder Juan Pablo Duarte
January 26th is a special day in the holiday calendar of The Dominican Republic and marks the birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte who is also known dearly as the father of The Dominican Republic. Saturday marks the official beginning of a long weekend here as Monday the 30th January 2012 is set aside as a national holiday to celebrate the 199th anniversary since his birth. Juan Pablo Duarte was known as one of the charismatic and most influential leaders in the revolution against Haiti that led to The Dominican Republic gaining it's independence on February 27th 1844. Local holidays here are always lots of fun, it has been said that all you need for a good party are 2 Dominicans and a bottle of rum! This being true, it's fair to say that the Dominican people really do know how to party and have a good time, so if you're here get out and about and become part of this unique fun loving culture. Dominican Mountaineers Conquer Mount Everest
Dominican Mountaineers Ivan Gomez, Karim Mella and Frederico Jovine began their assent to the summit of Mount Everest at 9.00pm last Friday 20th May 2011. Leading the group from camp 4 to a point in the final assent known as "The Balcony" the team suffered malfunctions with breathing apparatus which rapidly brought on the effects of Hypoxia, caused by insufficient oxygen supply to the body. This particular part of the climb is known as the "zone of death' simply because of the lack of oxygen in the atmosphere. Thankfully, the team with the assistance of experienced Sherpas managed to fix the problem and Karim Mella and Ivan Gomez were able to continue the climb. Unfortunately Frederico Jovine had to return to camp 4 as the effects of Hypoxia and hypothermia had put his life perilously in danger. Karim Mella reached the summit of Mount Everest at around 5.am on Saturday 21st of May, closely followed by Ivan Gomez. Together they are the first Dominicans to ever conquer Mount Everest and to place the Dominican flag on top of the roof of the world.

Source, Fort Collins, Colorado, April 12, 2011 - The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be "very active" with a forecast of five major hurricanes of Category 3 or stronger anticipated throughout 2011. This latest forecast from Philip Klotzbach and William Gray of the Colorado State University is generally thought to be the most reliable forecast barometer and is widely respected. "The probability of U.S. major hurricane landfall is estimated to be about 140 percent of the long-period average," said the scientists, who issue several seasonal hurricane forecasts each year "to satisfy the curiosity of the general public and to bring attention to the hurricane problem." Sun Country Airlines announce non-stop flights from Capital Region International Airport (Lansing, Michigan) to Punta Cana International Airport beginning each Friday from December 23rd 2011 to April 23rd 2012.
