Leones 4 Las Aguilas 3, Big Game Today!

Dominican baseball leagueAfter a thrilling match in Santo Domingo, game 7 saw The Leones from Santo Domingo claim victory on home soil and needing one more win for victory in the national baseball championship. The Aguilas from Santiago must win today to level the match to 4-4 which would leave one final game tomorrow to decide once and for all. No strangers to coming back from behind, Las Aguilas should be favorite to win on home turf today and hopefully set up the final game. Either way and regardless of what happens, this evening should be a thrilling game with everything to play for. If you are currently on vacation here ask a friendly local the best and most convenient place to watch the game and indulge in another of our favorite sports here, drinking ice cold Presidente Beer or rum on ice with Coke or Sprite..

Dominican Baseball LeagueIf you are a baseball fan and you're currently on vacation in The Dominican Republic, you're in for a treat. Right at this moment two teams are battling it out for the Dominican baseball championship. The two teams are The Aguilas from Santiago and The Leones from Santo Domingo. In a best of 9 final, The Leones stormed into a 3 game lead, however The Aguilas who just don't give up have leveled to 3 all. With just one of the teams requiring two games to claim the championship tensions throughout the island is high as each of the teams supporters gather en masse at local sports bars, supermarkets, colmados and basically wherever there is a TV close to a bar. The atmosphere is electric as the Dominican people take their baseball very seriously, so find a safe drinking hole and join in the fun. The final games are scheduled for today, Saturday 28th January, Sunday 29th January and Monday 30th January if still tied after Sunday.

Dominican Republic Watersports

This is an absolute water enthusiasts dream come true here in the Dominican Republic, especially on the north coast.  Cabarete once a sleepy beach town now proudly boasts World International Competitions at Pro Level for kite, wind and surf competitions.  Sponsorship is high and so is the class of athlete out there on the ocean.

Beginners though, don’t be alarmed there are many schools to choose from to learn where to put your hands and feet, and how to definitely get wet with a smile on your face.  Shop around for lessons or just take stock for a day or two and watch from the beach fronts.

Cabarete has certain beaches for kiting and surfing and you’ll soon be pointed in the right direction.  At Enquentro beach the surfers are out early, respect the rules of the road down here as local lads always have first waves as is customary in every country you visit.  Enquentro offers family friendly fun, a café pit stop and improvements are being made already for a skate ramp and BBQ areas so non surfers can join in the fun too.

Kite Beach just before you hit the main drag of Cabarete can be spotted in the distance as you will see the kiters up in the air performing their amazing leaps.  Pros and beginners mix alike and there are some fantastic kite schools available and bare back accommodations to choose from.

They Learn Early Over Here! Dominican RepublicThe Dominican Republic is the heart of winter baseball.This, of course, could be a bonus. When your other half starts getting antsy just drop some of these facts on him and you may be spending a little time in the DR soaking up the sun while he sits and yells at the umpire.

Major League Baseball or beisbol as it is called here in the Dominican Republic is a passion. With over 410 Dominican born players in the major leagues between 1958 and 2004 it is no wonder the sport of baseball is the top sport of this country and with Every city, town and village has a field dedicated to playing the game and every Sunday work clothes are replaced by uniforms and everyone heads to the game directly after church service. Pro players here are worshiped as heroes and recognized everywhere they go when they come home. Ask a kid who he would like to be when he grows up and the answer will likely be Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez or his favorite member of the Alou family. Here on the island the game is played for the love of the sport and young men aspire to play in the big leagues.

Ozzie Virgil was the first Dominican to play for a Major League baseball team in the United States and by the mid-50's,driven by the success of Juan Marichal and the three Alou brothers, Major League Baseball in the Dominican Republic had become internationally recognized as the home of Winter Baseball. Today Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and many others, proudly carry the Dominican Flag in the international arena.Playing Baseball in the Street - Dominican RepublicThe game was brought to the island by their Cuban neighbors and it began to gain international attention in the early 50's.
 
U S Marines were surprised to find pro teams already in action when they landed here. Now there are 5 pro teams, Santo Dominigo has two teams, Tigres del Licey, and Leones de Escojido; San Pedro de Macoris has Estrellas Orientales; Santiago has Aguilas del Cibao; and La Romana has Azucareros del Este. Each team play a sixty game schedule that begins the end of October and runs to February; the season ends in a round-robin play-off with the two finalist advancing to the Caribbean Series to play against the champions of Mexico Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
