Luperon is a good 1 hour and 40 minutes or so commute from Gregorio International Airport in Puerto Plata. The new airport in Santiago is probably a little closer (by 15/20 minutes) and most large charter and scheduled companies from Canada and the United States now fly in and out of Santiago airport. European charter flights are still not available from Santiago airport. Luperon is coastal however one needs to travel inland a good way to reach out to the point where Christopher Columbus landed for the second time in 1496 at La Isabela.

Luperon boasts a sizable town full of restaurants, bars, villas, marina, disco, small hospital, pharmacy and market, hardware stores and dentists. Also a Claro communications centre for international phone calls and money grams etc. A lot of the local business comes from the cruisers and boaters who reside in the Puerto Blanco marina during hurricane season. Worth a trip down to the marina just to gaze peacefully at the boats (and cruising community in general) Puerto Blanco Marina has a bar and super slow restaurant. The food is generally reasonable but be prepared to wait a good hour before receiving it! For quicker service look across the water to the left and you will see the Lighthouse restaurant and Luperon Yacht Club. Great panoramic views as you dine high on the hillsides and take advantage of the full view of the marina and surrounding waterways and mango swamps!
There is a large all inclusive hotel in Luperon aptly named Luperon Beach Resort providing all the usual trimmings expected in an all inclusive resort, for the independent traveller there are many bed and breakfasts lodgings to be found in town. Puerto Blanco Marina has a couple of rooms to rent behind the bar as well with showers and laundry facilities too!
Many unsign posted beaches can just be found by walking away from the Yacht Club along the shoreline, these spots are unspoilt and what they lack of in terms of facilities on hand i.e. cold beers and bathrooms they certainly make up for in tranquil beauty, blue turquoise waters and untamed natural wonder.
If you fancy a spot of sailing go to Puerto Blanco Marina and ask for Lucas who is French and speaks very good English. He owns a small catamaran and trimaran and for a very reasonable fee will take you for a short sail to the gorgeous fishing village of Cambiaso, here you’ll normally have a picnic lunch and go snorkelling in the bay. Lots of fish and reef to see in the clearest water then back on board for a sunbathe and chill out. Take your underwater camera with you.
Luperon is an archeological dream as further along the coast road at La Isabela National Park, the site and digs found are the remains of Christopher Columbus’ first colony of the ‘New World’. Also worth visiting in the area is the very beautiful Punta Rucia a haven for snorkellers and lovers of marine life.
