Scientifically known as Morinda Citrifolia, Noni has been used for centuries as a healing plant by the ancient cultures in the South Pacific islands.
The Carib Indians, who were one of the first inhabitants of Hispaniola, used the leaves as a poultice to treat cuts and various skin infections, but it is only in recent years that the juice of the Noni fruit has been widely marketed in the Dominican Republic.
Growing in the low coastal plains and along the shores, the mature tree will often reach a height of twenty feet or more. It bears a single warty fruit about the size of a potato which when ripe becomes translucent, soft, and has a foul smell. It is an extremely fast growing plant, taking only nine months for a seedling to grow to a full size fruit producing tree. All parts of the Noni plant (fruit, flowers, leaves, bark, roots) have medicinal properties. Noni juice is a rich source of proxeronine, an alkaloid used by the body to strengthen and revitalize cells and has been shown to stimulate the immune system.
As a juice or tonic it is claimed that the fruit, leaves, and root can help ease high blood pressure, diabetes, urinary disorders, arthritis, menstrual discomfort, respiratory and digestive problems, among many others. It is also a natural antiseptic, is effective against several different harmful bacterias, and also combats fungus and parasites. All parts of the plant provide vitamin C, E, calcium, magnesium, and zinc, and the leaves and roots are believed to contain complete protein. Because of its richness in antioxidants and essential immune acids, the medical industry is now recognizing Noni as a complementary alternative medicine.
