haiti-suppliesThe world has come together to help all those affected by the massive earthquake that hit Haiti last week.

The International Community has pledged US$400 million with the largest donors to date being the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the US government, who have both sent US$100 million each. The UK government, the UN and Brazil have sent US$10 million - with Brazil sending 14 tons of food and medical supplies. British Airways from the UK have sent planes full of emergency supplies, while Richard Branson´s Virgin Atlantic Airways are sending flights full of medical supplies and food via the US, as are American Airlines and Canada´s Air Canada

An amazing feat late last week, was that the UK public raised £15 million (approx US$24 million) in just 36 hours to help the Haitian people. There is help coming from all over the world - Cuba are sending doctors, there are supplies, food and medicines being sent from India, Morocco, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, South Korea, Japan, Canada to name but a few and even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie donated US$1 million as did US media magnate Ted Turner.

This weekend local Dominican tv stations came together and run a telethon raising RD$59 million (approx US$1.7million) with numerous donations from the Dominican public and celebreties alike.

The Dominican government has thrown itself in to help Haiti in everyway it can - and as it exports to Haiti over 800 different products (ranging from foodstuffs, textiles, cement, tin roofing etc) the UN has promised to purchase these items from the DR and get them distributed in Haiti to the agencies offering humanitarian assistance.
