Tropical Storm Tomas strengthened slightly overnight and is now producing top wind speeds of 50mph. Located 300 miles southwest of Port Au Prince, Haiti; Tomas is moving toward the north-northwest at 7 mph. At this present time experts from NOAA are predicting Tomas will pass close to the western coast of Haiti sparing the Island of Hispaniola a direct hit.
OUTLOOK Tomas is still expected to intensify over the next 24 hours to a possible Hurricane status. During Friday through Sunday the Dominican Republic rainfall could total 5 to 10 inches with some amounts up to 15 inches possible in the mountains. Life-threatening flooding and mud slides are likely in and around the mountains.
A Hurricane warning is in place for Haiti plus a tropical storm watch for the southern coast of the Dominican Republic from the Haiti border east to Barahona.
