The strike commenced at 6am Monday morning by the Alternative Social Forum (FSA) and they are demanding a general wage increase, improvement to the lack of electricity received and potable water services, also the modification of the law which regulates gasoline prices.
The Government's reaction was a little tardy and only after the strike got into full swing, which so far has seen one death. A man in the Santiago province has been shot by police, investigation at the moment is a little confusing as to how this event occured.
Dozens of other people have been injured during Monday's strike clashes through out the country.
In response the Alternative Social Forum has said that their strike managed to paralyze around 90% of the Dominican Republic, with commerce and transport greatly reduced in the nations capital of Santo Domingo.
During last week the Fernandez Government had unsuccessfully invited the leaders of the FSA to meet to conduct peaceful talks which were meant to have taken place over the weekend hoping to terminate the strike action.
The FSA have replied to the Governments invitation by stating that it was in fact a publicity stunt and was not an official invitation but just a mere press release and a manipulation of public opinion.
