An agreement signed by a U.S. government agency, Overseas Private Investments Corporation (OPIC) and the Export and Investment Center of the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD) is aimed at encouraging American construction companies to invest in the building of 10,000 low cost homes ranging in price from US$7000 to US$25,000 and costing an estimated US$370 million.
Focussing primarily on the Dominican Republic's eastern and northern regions due to the increase in tourism and free zone investment, the first units are expected to be ready in 12 to 24 months time. It is hoped that this initiative will improve the standard of living for workers living and working in these areas.
