Dominican authorities today are still maintaining a Tropical Storm Warning as Hanna leaves, after Hanna taking a turn for the worse and re-tracing tracks, the northern areas of the Dominican Republic and Haiti took a beating from high winds and heavy rain fall. Even though Tropical Storm Hanna is located some 90 miles away, it is predicted that Hanna will bring more rain and could regain into a Hurricane by Thursday. Predictions from NOAA say that there could be isolated amounts of up to 15 inches of rainfall over Hispaniola, and care is to be taken as the rains may cause flash flooding and mud slides. Coastal storm surge flooded is also to be expected of up to 3 feet.
In the meantime storm trackers are keeping a close eye on tropical Storms Ike and Josephine, which are still far out in the Atlantic, however Ike is predicted to become a hurricane later on today. As the Tropical Storm Alert from the Dominican Civil Guards stands, all schools were closed today and boating and shipping remained in port.
At airports in the Dominican Republic three international flights were cancelled from New York, Miami and San Juan in Puerto Rico. All flights were coming into Santo Domingo airport. Puerto Plata and Punta Cana airports remain open.
