Transport Unions threaten strike action over fuel costs
SANTO DOMINGO - Juan Hubieres, the President of Fenatrano - one of the Dominican Republic´s largest transport unions - has demanded President Leonel Fernandez government refrian from increasing taxes on fuel.Hubieres, who has become well known for his frequent and violent strikes demanded that the Government be transparent in the Hydrocarbon Law and stated that instead of the increases, the costs should be reduced as consumers are paying between RD$25 - RD$42 per gallon of fuel more than they should be.
Another one of the Dominican transport bosses from the truckers union, Fenatrano, has also threatened strike action and will also increase transport prices - the amounts have yet to be published.
Leonel Fernandez met with business leaders on Monday and announced that the tax will be gradually increased over a period of one year and will be applied as inflation dictates as to least affect the more needy. The meeting lasted for more than 1hour but afterwards the Government and the business leaders agreed on the bills submitted to Congress, which includes the Law 112-00 on Hydrocarbons, which applies indexing on the tax.
