A long awaited highway linking Samana province to the rest of the Dominican Republic is set for construction.  Freddy Perez who is the Public Works Minister for the government announced that the reconstruction of the Nagua to Samana to Las Terrenas highway would begin and a new highway linking would be constructed to link to the brand new Samana International Airport at El Catey.

The roadway will be 106 kilometers and built by the Santo Domingo-Rincon de Milinillos Road Concession, it should be concluded between December and January of 2008, and construction will cost approx US$151 million.

The new road infrastructure will connect Santo Domingo the nations capital with the north east half of the island and will massively reduce the trip from Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas from four and a half hours to just ninety minutes.

We wondered at The Real DR newsdesk whether this had anything to do with President Fernandez's recent trip to Samana this week from the capital to inaugurate the new airport at Samana????
