Tomorrow (Friday, 24th September) is a National Holiday to celebrate Virgen de las Mercedes. The virgin is said to have appeared on a cross that the Spanish had erected before the battle of Santo Cerro in 1495.She is said to have been dressed all in white with a baby in her arms. In 1880, a beautiful white church was built a top the Santo Cerro mountain to replace a smaller worshiping area built earlier. The church is still a popular pilgramage for the faithful.
Please be aware...most shops, stores and banks will be closed until Monday. Please note roads will be extremely busy, as will be the beaches!
