The Battle of March 19 happened on this day 163 years ago in the southern province of Azua, when 2500 Dominican soldiers under the command of General Pedro Santana defeated President Charles Herard's Haitian Army in a battle fought by the Dominicans using clubs, stones, machetes and other common implements.

It will be marked with a parade headed by President Leonel Fernandez and participated in by students, civil society representatives and members of the military.

Before the parade, that will begin at 10:30am, provincial authorities and members of the Patriotic Events Commission will attend a mass and lay a wreath  at the monument to the Heroes of the Battle of Azua.
