Actually, today is commemorated in memory of the assassination of Patria Mercedes Mirabal, María Argentina Minerva Mirabal and Antonia María Teresa Mirabal on the orders of Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1960.
Internationally, the day has been observed since 2000.
