At the closing of the 15th Pan American Games last week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil the team for the Dominican Republic stood with their heads held high. Despite sports failure and the absence of a group of top athletes, the Dominican Republic’s team scooped a massive 29 medals in total. The only islands to finish in the first 10 countries were Dominican Republic who came 9th and Cuba who came 2nd.
The Dominican Republic surpassed a lot of nations with much higher populations including Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru and Bolivia.
Except when the continent’s main multi sport event was held in the country in 2003, the 29 medals won by the Dominican Republic surpassed even the historical high of 15 won in San Juan Puerto Rico back in 1979.
