Port Au Price, Haiti - Haitian Wismond Exantus Jean-Pierre, 24 years of age, was found on Saturday after 12 days buried beneath the wreckage of a hotel and food store in the country's capital. His brother had heard him tapping beneath the rubble, and tapped back. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
He was trapped in the fruit shop, on the ground floor and felt that he had a very slim chance of being found. All those days he was down there knocking and yelling, and no-one heard him. As a stroke of luck, just yesterday his brother heard him knocking on some wood and found him - to which his brother reacted quickly and went for help. The rescuers came and brought tools`to help remove Wismond from the rubble, and he could tell that his rescuers were as tired as he was, but they fought on to remove him from the rubble.
As we was trapped in the fruit shop, he attributes his survival to the fact that he was close to a case of cola and potato chips which he lived on during his ordeal. He couldnt find his mobile phone, nor could he move too much, but he gave his thanks to God, cola and the potato chips.
He is reported to have told reporters that in his head he said to God, 'If you save me, I will be your servant. I will glorify your name'. He cannot really recall how long he had been under the rubble for - he thought it may have been about 4 or 5 days, but in fact it turned out to be 12. There were others trapped near him, including the owner of the hotel, one of his sons and a cousin. There were also two women on the first floor, one doing the cooking and the other doing the laundry but after the earthquake and subsequent collapse of the building, he could hear noises, but after a while it stopped. He tried to call to the people who were there, but none replied, and he oculd not tell whether they were alive or not.
All the time he spent under the rubble, he had a splitting headache and felt stiff, but as soon as he was rescued the doctors gave him some medicine and treatment and Wismond has told reporters that "Now I feel great."
