Super Sub for the mega rich
London - Virgin boss Richard Branson has unveiled a new toy for the mega rich...A deep-sea submarine. This is not your regular type of submarine, it is the "Necker Nymph" or an "underwater plane." This sub can dive up to 40 meters below the sea surface and is the latest addition Sir Richard´s collection of very expensive items which include his own private island, a superyacht and a spaceship.
If you have enough cash just lying around, the experience aboard the sub, will be like flying under the wave and is also designed to perform dolphin like flips. It is not cheap...for a one week charter, it will cost you US$25,000 and on top of that there is another US$88,000 for the sub's superyacht launch vessel, the "Necker Belle."
The one of its kind sub, which cost Branson US$631,000, is the first of its kind and uses fighter jet technology and was designed by Hawkes Ocean Technologies. It´s transparency allows divers a 360 degree view of marine life and Virgin is marketing it as a way to view dolphins and other marine life close up.
Richard´s new new toy is also environmentally friendly. It is buoyant, which stops it from mistakenly landing on reefs, and it is relatively quiet, allowing it to pass through fragile ecosystems without causing too much raucus.
Any potential customers must take half day safety course prior to going out on the sub and can then dive for up to two hours at a time.
The "Necker Nymph" will be delivered to Necker Island, Branson's private Caribbean island later this month.
