The City Council of Santiago (second largest city in the Dominican Republic) has planned to commence the first stages of a streetcar system for the city mid 2009. With hope of improving the masss congestion that Santiago is famous for. Costing US$300 million the Spanish railway company FEVE is in charge of building the streetcar system and to date final stages are nearly ready. The streetcars first stage will be in the East West route of Santiago and will cover a 21 kilometer beginning at the Cibao International Airport.
