Stephanie was injured in Haiti after the tragic earthquake last week and was transferred to the Dario Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo for treatment to her arms and spine which were in need of immediate medical attention.
When they arrived in the Domincan Republic, Stephanie´s mother, who is Haitian by birth, told her father what had happened to his daughter and requested he donate blood for her. On top of this, they urgently needed RD$100,000 (Approx US$2770) for special equipment to help support her back and legs - this amount of money the family did not have.
Eventually, someone who wished to remain anonymous, loaned the family the cash to that Stephanie could receive the treatment she so urgently required.
All this was bought to light by the media, who realized that there was a young Dominican National who was in need of urgent assistance to enable her to regain the use of her arms and legs.
The father of Stephanie, Joaquin, works in the Dominican National Police as a Private assigned to the Intelligence unit of the force. He assured reporters that he kept in contact with his daughters but his economic situation kept him from visiting them.
