Price of bread to increase once more
Some bakeries around the country have started to raise bread prices as a result of increased demand for flour, but businesses will meet on Wednesday to determine whether the increase will be generalized around the whole country.Yesterday it was reported that bakeries in the city of Santiago, independently increased the price of the standard breads by RD$1. Last week, a 120lb sack of flour increased from RD$1,100 to RD$1,340 due to the recent increase in wheat prices on the international market.
The presidents of the National Union of Workers (of small and medium businesses) Francisco Chaplain, and the Flour Manufacturers Association of Santiago, Ramon Silverio, rwill be meeting to discuss whether to pass the increases on to the consumer as they claim it is impossible for them to assume the increase.
Chaplain said that other products that are used to make bread have also gone up in price. He cited among them the oil, which has increased from RD$600 to RD $700 for a can.
He said that these costs are a tax burden that ultimately will be transferred to the consumer.
