Predicted storm hits Northeast US

Upto 16 inches of the powdery white stuff paralized the corridor from Washington to New York state, leaving deep snow, blustery winds and freezing temperatures.

By early Thursday morning, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington had announced new annual snow records, and more than a foot of snow lay across parts of New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg reported that the city would re-open on Thursday and apologised to the millions of children who were hoping for another day off school.


The three major airports in the New York area, La Guardia, JFK and Newark were in limbo Thursday morning. The airlines warned passengers to call ahead prior to travelling to these airports as many a flight was severely delayed or cancelled.

Philadelphia International Airport, which had accumulated 14 inches by the end of Wednesday, said there was a good chance a large chunk of its flights would be scrubbed Thursday. Crews were working feverishly to clear snow from runways further south in Washington, but officials at Dulles International and Reagan National airports said many of their flights remained uncertain as well.

In the aftermath of the storm, thousands of homes and businesses along the east coast, from Virginia to Pennsylvania, were left without power late Wednesday through early Thursday, all caused by power lines being bought down by icing and the weight of the snow
