Rafael Trujillo Dominican DictatorDominican Republic’s President Mr Leonel Fernandez held a 4 hour long meeting this week with the ruling PLD party deputies and the topic that monopolized the long evening was the passing of the Municipal Law, which would in effect cripple the Dominican Municipal League (LMD) which is considered an “anachronism” from the dictator Rafael Trujillo’s era. The meeting was held at the National Palace in the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo.

The Municiplal Law which has already been approved by the Senate leaves the LMD without specific function’s, by stripping it of its current function of controlling and supervising the City Councils budgets.  With its current structure, the LMD oversees a large amount of the Dominican Budget in the region of RD$700million annually.

According to the new law the LMD would now be limited to just making recommendations to the City Councils and this new law also leaves in the “air” the allocation of funds to the Dominican Municipalities Federation.
