New Pediatric Heart Unit Opens in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Dominican RepublicSanto Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic has a new pediatric heart unit at the Diagnostic Advanced Medical and Telemedicine Center (Cedimat).
Figures show that eight hundred children a year are born with cardio vascular problems in the Dominican Republic and at the moment there are over two thousand children waiting for medical assistance.

With the new unit opening Freddy Madera who is Head Surgeon at the Center said that in the last seven years, five hundred children’s lives had been saved by heart surgery at the Center in Santo Domingo.
 
With the new unit they are now hoping to treat a further one hundred and seventy children by the end of 2007, with an already seven hundred patients listed and waiting for surgery.

The children to be assisted are all from poor and low income backgrounds who without this help would not be able to afford surgery of this kind in the Dominican Republic.
