ImageDominican President, Leonel Fernandez, inaugurated the work on the new highway (El Coral) last week. The new highway will reduce by more than 50km the distance between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

The work has been awarded to Constructora Autopista del Coral S.A., who have promised to have the work completed within 3 years at an estimated cost of US$279million.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Public Works Secretary, Victor Diaz Rua, announced that the government will also give to the contractor a further US$10million in order to re-start the work on the Touristic Boulevard in Punta Cana which encompasses all the hotels in the zone in order to reduce the amount of traffic passing through La Otra Banda

Victor Rua announced that the Dominican Government is not far from completing the "circle" Santo Domingo-Bavaro-Samana-Puerto Plata route, which are the most powerful tourist zones in the Caribbean.

The new road will connect to the south of Higuey to join up with the main road which joins up with Punta Cana airport and to also join with the Touristic Boulevard in Punta Cana.

The road will be constructed with a 28.9 metre width, 4 lanes (2 in each direction) a central reservation division of almost 10 metres and pavements of 2.5 metres wide. It will also use some of the existing highway from Santo Domingo and will give easy access to La Romana and its airport, Bayahibe, with connections to the International Airport in Punta Cana and the East Coast.
