A granite memorial honoring the victims is located in neighboring Rockaway Parkway.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be on hand at Friday's service scheduled for 9 a.m. at Beach 116th Street and Rockaway Boulevard.
Memorial Service Honors Flight 587 Victims
Nine years after Flight 587 crashed en-route to the Dominican Republic from Kennedy Airport, New York, a memorial service in Queens, New York will honor those who died in the crash. The plane crashed near Belle Harbor killing all 265 on board plus a further 5 people on the ground. The crash was just two months after 9/11although after an investigation the cause of the crash was proved to be the over-use of the plane's rudder to counter wake turbulence.
