Michel Joseph Martelly or "Sweet Micky" as he more commonly known has reportedly won 60% of the vote in yesterdays run off election to determine who will be the next President of Haiti. Former First Lady Mirlande Manigat came in with approximately 40% of the vote which makes Martelly the outright victor according to a former ex Dominican Ambassador to Haiti Alberto Desprade. Local reports state that the election was conducted relatively peacefully with the exception of two shootings on Sunday and an incident involving musician and former Haitian Presidential candidate Wycliffe Jean with superficial injuries after is hand was grazed by a bullet. Political pundits note that the turnout was lower than had been anticipated but it seems as though Martelly will become President as and when departing President René Preval leaves office in May. Michel Martelly is an energetic and popular musical performer, composer and sociopolitical activist who became active during the 1991 coup d'etat.
