Major cold snap hits Europe
LONDON UK - A bitterly cold snap from Siberia hit the UK hard yesterday, with heavy snowfall that created chaos on the transport network and forced hundreds of schools to close, while the rest of Europe suffered record breaking freezing temperatures.After affecting Scotland and Northern England, the snowstorm moved south to the middle counties and London it was reported to have settled as much as 47cm deep in places.
The UK Met office reported that this weather is expected to continue for the next two weeks, and also reported that this was the longest period of freezing temperatures in the UK since December 1981. The lowest temperature was recorded in the northwest of Scotland at 13c below zero.
All airports in the country were affected, especially Londoners. Gatwick resumed its activities in the afternoon, after closing one of its runways for over 20 hours and was forced to cancel over 400 flights. Heathrow, the busiest of the UK´s airports reported some cancellations and delays.
In Hampshire, the snow also caused serious disruption on the roads, where hundreds of vehicles remained blocked for hours, forcing firefighters to intervene and help out stranded drivers and passengers.
Accross the pond in the US, temperatures have been reported to be as low as 2c in Miami and surrounding areas overnight as a large cold front from Canada is bracing the US. Floridian farmers are worried that this current cold snap could affect the Florida famous citrus crop and are taking necessary steps to protect their livelihoods.
