Crocodile in the Dominican RepublicNews again for the Environment Minister Omar Ramirez in the Dominican Republic as he announced that until two months ago there were no crocodiles in the rivers of the Dominican Republic.  He said that years ago it would not have been uncommon to see crocodiles in the nations rivers, but now at least two reptiles have been spotted in the rivers of the nations capital, Santo Domingo. He said that his department plans to capture the crocodiles LIVE which are now living in the Ozama and Isabela rivers.

They made their appearance due to the rivers swelling with the huge amount of rainfall received from Tropical Storm Noel. The plan is to capture the crocs using special darts causing immobilization!

In a recent interview by the Corripio Media Group, Mr Ramirez said that until now their capture had been difficult as there is so much food in the river and this crocodile variety usually feeds on tilapias and frogs and that so far they haven’t been lured to the carious snares put out. He also confirmed the sighting of 2 crocodiles in the La Barquita neighborhood of Santo Domingo which had escaped from a pen of an unidentified man who allegedly breeds exotic animals.

Mr. Ramirez said that these crocodiles are of a species which is similar to those in Lake Enriquillo click here which are not an aggressive breed and tend to flee when humans are present, which in turn makes their capture all the more difficult.  Crews from Semarena and the National Zoo of the Dominican Republic are continuing to search for the crocs – they better make it snappy now!
