Lionfish reported in Dominican waters
Sosua - The Deputy Minister of Environment has emitted a warning to bathers and fishermen alike along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic after some local fishermen caught a lionfish in their nets. These fish (Pterois Volitans) are part of the scorpion fish family and live along reefs and hide in rocks. Normally these fish are indigenous to East Africa and the Far East, but nowawdays they have spread to the Florida Coast and are now reported to be in Dominican waters.
No fatality or serious injury has ever been reported with this species, but the fish has long spines which are poisonous and will, if prevoked, defend itself. The fish normally eats under cover of darkness and will hunt in the evening and night hours so the warning has been issued to fishermen who work at night and for any other water users to take great care.
