dominican presidentSpeaking in front of his PLD supporters in San Francisco de Macorís yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez sent out the clearest signal to date that he will not be standing for the Presidency for a second consecutive term. Many people believed he would try and change the Constitution Law and seek re-election which brought bad publicity both nationally and internationally, however yesterday he said “Let no one be mistaken, next year the PLD Party, democratically and freely, will choose a candidate and the candidate that the PLD chooses, whoever they are, will get the support of the entire PLD family.”

He continued “I must tell you that I haven’t come here as pre-candidate of the PLD, I’m here as president of the PLD and guarantor that in 2012 the PLD will continue directing the destinies of the country. My work consists of transmitting to the PLD that we are a family, because it’s not about personal interests since the sacred and sovereign interest of the Dominican people is what prevails here.”
