Dominican Motor Concho's are the most popular mode of transport hereFive thousand helmets are on their way to the Dominican Republic as a gift from hospitals, organizations, university partners and government officials in an effort to reduce traffic related injuries and deaths.  The New York Presbyterian Hospital people are scheduled to attend the 50th Caribbean Series in Santiago to help spread the message that “helmets save lives”. The group are going to distribute 5,000 helmets as part of the World Health Organization Helmet Initiative.  Traffic accidents are the top cause of death for men of working age in the Dominican Republic and motorbikes and mopeds account for the majority of incidents.  Last September the New York Presbyterian Hospital participated in the First National Trauma Training Course in Santiago to improve outcomes for head trauma related cases.
