European tour operator Thomas Cook is evacuating 4000 tourist from its resorts in Tunisia because of civil unrest and demonstrations. Many Tunisians are protesting against their Government over unemployment and poverty, the protest have so far been centered around the Tunis area of the country however Thomas Cook are taking no chances the unrest could spread to tourist area.
Earlier today a spokesman for Thomas Cook said "Although there has been no specific problems for our holidaymakers, their well-being is our primary concern so, as a precaution, we've taken the decision to bring them back to the UK as soon as we can, using our fleet of aircraft today".
Yesterday, The Foreign Office in London also changed their travel advice for Tunisia stating “advising against all but essential travel to the country".
TUI (who owns both Thomson and First Choice travel) said it did not see the need for a full evacuation of customers from Tunisia although it is organizing aircraft for those customers wishing to return home.
"The safety of our customers and staff in Tunisia is our primary concern and we are continuously reviewing and monitoring the situation. Should the situation change, we will take immediate action and update customers".
