Increase In Telecommunications Continues

Dominicans are reaching out and touching someone more than ever.

Figures released by the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) show a 5% growth in the first quarter of this year as compared to the same period in 2006.

Total number of lines, fixed and mobile, is 5,763,949 for a coverage of 64%.

By far, the largest density of service is in mobile services with a total of 4,863,865 cellphone lines divided between prepaid service with 4,171,816 and post paid service with 692,049. This is an increase of 6% or 258,206 and a tele-density coverage of 54%.

The other 10% coverage comes from fixed lines. Currently there are 900,084 fixed lines made up of 607,507 residential lines, 255,277 business lines, 22,734 fixed wireless lines and 14,566 public phone lines.

Internet accounts also continued to grow with a 6% increase to 195,099 accounts representing a 17% coverage.

Due to consumer demand 99 percent of the network's infrastructure has been digitalized.
