Importers Respond to High Price Criticism

After much finger pointing and blame laying over the lack of price reductions in light of the DR-CAFTA agreement, the President of the Dominican Importers Association says that lower prices should be felt in the "next few days".

Manuel Cabrera blamed a number of factors for the continuing high prices. He said importers were waiting for the results of the pact to take place and that some products previously exempt from the ITBIS tax are now subject to it. He said products now being taxed by ITBIS will not be cheaper. He also stated some products cannot be lowered as businesses and retailers are feeling the impact of higher government taxes.
