Hurricane Dean Intensifys Over Dominican Republic is now Category 4

The latest results from the National Hurricane Center can be read further on in this article.  At the moment the south coast of the Dominican Republic is bracing itself for some category 4 level high winds and high waves especially from Barahona going westwards to the Haitian/Dominican border.  A hurricane warning is now in place for this location.  Heavy rains are a huge concern as these rains could cause flash flooding and mudslides in this rural area.

Latest update from the National Hurricane Center is as follows:

Hurricane Dean 01.30am Dominican RepublicHurricane Warnings & Tropical Storm Warnings:A Hurricane Warning is issued for the south western peninsula of Haiti...from the Haiti/Dominican Republic border to Port-au-Prince...and a Tropical Storm Warning is issued from Port-au-Prince to the northern Haitian/Dominican Republic border.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the south coast of the Dominican Republic from Barahona westward to the Haiti-Dominican Republic border.  A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area within the next 24 hours.  Preparation to protect life and property should be rushed to completion. This means you should now have your hurricane evacuation plan ready and moving.

A Tropical Storm warning is in effect along the south coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano westwards to Barahona.

Direction:Dean is moving towards the west near 18 mph...30km/hr...and this general motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours on this track.  The core of the hurricane will be moving well south of Puerto Rico tonight and South of the Dominican Republic early Saturday.

Hurricane Dean infared 01.30am 18 August 2007 Dominican RepublicWinds:Dean is a catagory 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.  Data collected from an air force Hurricane Hunter Aircraft indicates that maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph...230km/hr with higher gusts.  Hurricane Winds are expected to extend up to 60 miles...95km...from the center and Tropical Storm Force Winds extending outward up to 205 miles...335km.
