Haiti´s debt cancelled by World Bank
Washington, USA - The World Bank has announced on Friday last week that it has cancelled Haiti's US$36 million debt. The nation that was devastated by an earthquake in January owed the money to the International Development Association, the World Bank's fund for the poorest countries.The President of the World Bank Group, Robert B Zoellick, commented that the relieving Haiti's debt was part of their effort to releive the pressure on the country and to help in its reconstruction. The cancellation of the debt was made possible by contributions from countries such as Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Prior to Januarys earthquake, Haiti received US$1.2 billion in debt relief from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other creditors and it has recently been reported that almost US$10 billion has been pledged as part of the long term assistance to the country as part of its reconstruction.
