Deep Sea Fishing is a sport not normally picked as a girls day out, but 5 local lassies decided to take advantage of the fine September weather and take an afternoons private charter out with the popular Gone Fishing Company in Puerto Plata! With plenty of space to sunbathe, watch your rods, have a drink, put on some cool tunes and have a dance and then sit back a laze around as you trawl up the north coasts shoreline in beautiful deep blue clear waters - there's not alot wrong with that as the girls found out!!
The beauty of a private charter is that you can take the boat where you want to. The girls opted for an afternoon motor up to Sosua, motoring right past the deep waters near Puerto Plata International Airport where the famous wall dives are, out to deeper waters to check the fishing sites and then on to the famous Three Rocks Dive Site just after Sosua Bay.
With their experienced captain Kiko up on the fly deck, the girls were in safe hands and whilst the rods were out baited and waiting for a bite, Wilson the excellent crew member saw that the drinks were flowing, sun tan lotion was passed around, great sounds were pumping out of the music player and the girls could all sit back, relax, chat, laugh and wonder at their great luck on being onboard a superb sports fishing boat with no one else but their own company for a whole afternoon!!

Food is included in your half day charter but the girls brought their own coolie onboard as well packed full of goodies to have an onboard picnic at Three Rocks Dive Site. Three Rocks is a beautiful location of still deep waters, where an underwater adventure awaits. Kiko had put on some snorkel equipment for the ladies, and everyone jumped off the Gone Fishing Sports Fisher into the refreshing waters. Ever the wonderful hosts, Wilson even passed down some Caribbean Cocktails for the girls to slurp on whilst bobbing around in the turquoise waters.
You would think - Could it get more perfect than this? Well it certainly did for the lucky girls as whilst motoring back in the glorious afternoon sun, a pod of around 25 dolphins joined the Captain, Crew and awestruck girls for the ride back home!
For a breathtaking 30 minutes the dolphins played, jumped and swam at the front of the Gone Fishing boat. Sat down on the front deck everyone had a birds eye view of these heavenly creatures playing with the boat slicing through the ocean blue. It was an unbelievable site and an unexpected treat as alongside large dolphins were plenty of calves who were just too eager to show off their jumping skills!!
To be that close to one of the most friendly and playful water mammals alive was just unbelievable. From Gone Fishings left hand side pontoon - the girls could almost touch the dolphins as they crowded round the front end. An amazing site, a joyful and teary experience for some, and the beauty of the sound of the boat rushing through the deep waters and the little squeaks and pips of this wonderful pod is a memory that is almost beyond words.
The pod left the boat just shortly before the boat hit the more shallow waters of Bergantine just outside Playa Dorada, but from being serenaded from Sosua back to Puerto Plata was excellent.
When the lines were reeled in - it was the old story of the one that got away as a huge bite had been taken from one of the lines - but you know what - it just didn't matter! Even without the dolphins joining in the afternoon fun - it was a fantastic afternoon out all the same, with good company, an amazingly fun crew and captain, sunbathing, snorkeling and plenty of laughs who actually cared that we didn't catch anything! The girls certainly didn't and thats for sure!!
