Aerial shot of Santo Domingo, Dominican RepublicAll the way from Naples, Florida a south western company is now opening their offices in the nations capital of Santo Domingo.  Due to a slump in the Florida housing market and already being a company known for tapping into the Hispanic market in Florida, the move makes great sense.  The opening will be hosted by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and it is their first ribbon cutting ceremony outside of the United States.

Stafford Engineering will be opening on Tuesday and will offer architectural, engineering and real estate, as well as construction management and business relocation services.  Steven Stafford owner of Stafford Engineering and chief financial officer of the new Dominican Republic based Escoto Stafford Consulting International, commenced his engineering business in 1999.  With offices in various locations through out the States the business initially thrived, however with the exception of this year, sales slumped drastically.

Raul Cassanova who is now partner and president first brought up the idea of doing business in the Dominican Republic and approached Steven Stafford with the suggestion.

For about a year and a half the company had been working with the Hispanic market in south west Florida and they discovered a demand that other business's were not serving.
Stafford said "When I started the company with two offices in geographically different areas, Massachusetts and Florida people told me it could not be done, yet we have a thriving business.  Not too many people work with the Hispanic population, so why am I doing it? There's an opportunity there.  It's the same thing with going to the Dominican Republic."

The economy for engineering services is down in south west Florida because of the general lack of construction, however in the Dominican Republic, construction continues at a higher price.

Cassanova said " the country is changing and there is a need for businesses that will work with the local government to do feasibility studies and to ensure that developments are consistent with zoning and needs of the local areas."

Escoto Stafford Consulting International is already talking with its first client - Dominican developer Group Metro - about working on one of the company's communities outside Santo Domingo, Cassanova said.
