floods-in-naguaNagua - Around 300 homes were flooded and damaged as a result of the rains that fell over the region last week in the town of Nagua. Thankfully, rural communities were not isolated, as initially thought despite several rivers breaking their banks. Those affected are waiting to be helped.

The governor and chairman of the Emergency Committee in Maria Trinidad Sanchez province, Aristides Yed Victoria, said dozens of neighborhoods, streets and communities have been flooded, and rescuers have been giving out food rations and reported they are awaiting mattresses, sheets and blankets.

Although the waters were starting to subside on Sunday, all the emergency services are on high alert as a preventive measure, because even though the rains are less intense, they do continue and with this hundreds of families affected said they fear possible landslides and mudslides which would lead to the eventaul collapse of their houses.

Floods are common in the neighborhoods of Roberto Fermin, Ensanche Trinidad, Jose Ramirez, Rio Mar, Pueblo Nuevo, Buenos Aires, Esmeralda, Quisqueyano, Freedom and some other downtown streets including the local police station.
