The G-2 Division of the Army's Intelligence has confirmed that in the last few weeks 27 guns have been confiscated from as many Haitians who would have used them in robberies and other crimes in the Dominican Republic.
Amongst the weapons confiscated are pistols and the homemade "chilenas". Guns have been picked up in the border towns of Dajabon, Elias Pina and the provinces of the Jimani districts.
Military people have stated that the gangs of Haitians who cross the border are looking to rustle cattle and steal motorcycles as well as using their guns for hold ups to rob Haitian and Dominican merchants who conduct their busines between the two nations.
The gangs escaping from Haiti have been running from their own authorities, many from the capital of Haiti, Port au Prince, and are looking to re group once in the Dominican Republic.
Army Intelligence Chief, Colonel Elvis Almonte, said the situation is now one of great concern to the Dominican Republic because of the proliferation of the Haitian gangs which run throughout the whole of the border region.
