Ex US Presidents visit the DR

Former US President - Bill Clinton has travelled to the Dominican Republic on many occasions and in doing so has built a close relationship with the country and its people and, just recently, ex-president Jimmy Carter made his first visit to the country.

Jimmy Carter came to the DR on October 6th, arriving at Puerto Plata`s Gregorio Luperon Airport where he was met by US Embassy staff. The purpose of the ex-president`s trip was to raise awareness about malaria, and to push for the eradication of the disease in Haiti and the DR. This was Jimmy Carter`s first visit to the DR and he also visited Dajabon. Local press reported that the purpose of his visit to Dajabon was to learn about the situation on the DR/Haitian border. Carter then flew down to Santo Domingo where he presented a bi-national strategy for fighting the diseas.

Former President Bill Clinton, has visited the country on many occasions - His latest visit was early October, when he met with Dominican businessmen from various sectors and went to neighboring Haiti with them. One of the businessmen, Frank Rainieri - President of the Punta Cana Group, was one of these businessmen and they met with Haitian officials saying that they should imitate the tourism model of the Punta Cana Group in order to boost their country´s economy and create employment for its people.

Clinton has been a guest of Oscar de la Renta (originally from the DR) and is reported to have enjoyed many of the countries golf courses and he has also vacationed at the Punta Cana Resort & Club along with his wife Hillary.
