European airspace partially reopened
Around 50% of flights over Europe are expected to go ahead on Tuesday accordong to the Eurocontrol air traffic agency. Some flights have taken off in northern Europe after five days of a 100% no-fly zone caused by the spread of volcanic ash from Iceland.Aircraft have departed Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt and other airports but some flights are still grounded. Unfortunately, there is now another ash cloud spreading from Iceland, which means that most UK airspace, including London, is to remain closed for the time being even though there have been some reports of it partially opening on the afternoon of April 20th.
NATS, the UK´s air traffic control authority, has commented that even though limited flights are departing from Scotland and Northern Ireland, it is unlikely that any London airport or others such as Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol etc would re-open.
Airline websites are still advising passengers to check the status of flights before travelling to the airports in order to avoid further disappointment.
