DR preparing for 50th anniversary of the Mirabal Sisters

mirabal-monumentThis coming November 25 will mark half a century of the horrendous murder of the Mirabal sisters and their driver Rufino de la Cruz.

An official commission was created to mark the anniversary and the executive issued other decrees on Saturday to appoint a new deputy minister of Labour and the Executive Committee to amend the Police Reform to include several generals as members. The new law, titled 471-10, is an official commission that will organize events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of assassination of the Mirabal sisters.

The committee is composed of the Culture and Women Ministry, the current Committee Ephemeris Patrias, the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies, the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications and the Mirabal Sisters Foundation.

The decree states: "November 25, 1960, a group of thugs, murderers on the order of tyrannical government led by Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, cruelly murdered anti-Trujillista Minerva, Patria and Maria Teresa Mirabal with their trusted driver Rufino de la Cruz." Another part of the decree designating Juan Bautista Mieses, Deputy Minister of Labor and amending Article 2 of Decree 220-10 that integrates the Executive Committee of the Police Reform, in addition to their current functions, the generals Rolando Rosado Mateo, Nelson Rosario, Manuel Castro, Valentín Rosado, Cesar A, Sena and R. Leonte Albuquerque.
