Incredible coastlines, a wide variety of accomodation and an eclectic culture are just some of the reasons that the World Trade Organization (WTO) has named the Dominican Republic the hottest Caribbean destination.
The other reason that tourists worldwide are attracted to the country is apparently the quality of the country's amber and larimar. Dominican ambar is among the most valued in the world and has become not only a popular souvenir but a hot commodity with tourists.
Dominican ambar was created by tree sap that hardened billions of years ago. It is abundant on the north coast (thus the nickname 'Amber Coast') and in the Santiago region. It comes in a variety of colours and clarities and is valued for its inclusions such as insects or plant life. Its price is comparable to other semi-precious gems. Larimar is a turquoise stone found only in the Dominican Republic. It can often be found teamed with ambar creating a piece usually called 'Happy Hour'.
