The International Association of Golf Tour Operators or IAGTO has named the Dominican Republic the “Golf Destination of the Year”. The award was presented to the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia at the 2008 International Golf Travel Market’s (IGTM) annual meeting held this month in Marbella Spain. The Dominican Republic’s Tourism Minister said “The IAGTO award affirms that the Dominican Republic has arrived on the international cont/...scene as an important new “it” destination for golf. The world is taking notice of the Dominican Republic’s world-class designer golf courses set amid stunning sea sides, beaches and mountains in an accessible and affordable destination”.
Every year the IGTM conference meets uniting golf tour operators and with hoteliers, resorts and golf courses from all over the world enabling business and growth through out the golfing industry. The famous trade show highlights top golf travel suppliers, resorts and destinations and their services offered.
Dominican Republic’s Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia continued his speech “Since the first designer golf course opening in the Dominican Republic, which was teeth of the Dog at the world-popular Casa de Campo resort, golf has been a booming facet for the country’s tourism industry. The Dominican Republic blessed with breath taking countryside and pristine beaches is home to some of the world’s most dramatic and spectacular golf courses designed by legends such as Pete Dye, P.B. Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Gary Player, Tom Fazio and Nick Faldo”.
In honor of the award the IAGTO will be hosting an official IAGTO Fam Trip for 50 people and also 40 members of IAGTO Members (Golf Tour Operators) and 10 members of the International Golf Travel Writers Association who will get to experience the superb golfing facilities first hand that the Dominican Republic has to offer.
Another accolade for the golfing standards the Dominican Republic has to offer is the hugely popular “Travel & Leisure Golf Magazine” publication which currently has a circulation of over 650,000 named in their “Players Paradise” section the Faldo Legacy Course at Roco Ki as one of the top ten best new golf courses in the world.
“Golfweek Magazine” which is another popular read with a circulation of 150,000 readers will be ranking Punta Espada Golf Course number one along with the Faldo Legacy Course at Roco Ki to be ranked number 20 in the Top 50 Courses in the Caribbean and Mexico edition.
