mt_everest_mapDominican Mountaineers Ivan Gomez, Karim Mella and Frederico Jovine began their assent to the summit of Mount Everest at 9.00pm last Friday 20th May 2011. Leading the group from camp 4 to a point in the final assent known as "The Balcony" the team suffered malfunctions with breathing apparatus which rapidly brought on the effects of Hypoxia, caused by insufficient oxygen supply to the body. This particular part of the climb is known as the "zone of death' simply because of the lack of oxygen in the atmosphere. Thankfully, the team with the assistance of experienced Sherpas managed to fix the problem and Karim Mella and Ivan Gomez were able to continue the climb. Unfortunately Frederico Jovine had to return to camp 4 as the effects of Hypoxia and hypothermia had put his life perilously in danger. Karim Mella reached the summit of Mount Everest at around 5.am on Saturday 21st of May, closely followed by Ivan Gomez. Together they are the first Dominicans to ever conquer Mount Everest and to place the Dominican flag on top of the roof of the world.

This is an amazing accomplishment particularly given the fact that these guys have the warm blood of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean coursing through their veins.  Mount Everest was first officially conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on the 29th May 1953.
