At the moment the Dominican Republic’s current large capacity international links are through 3 optic fiber cable system inclosing Antilles 1, whose capacity is a 2.5 megabytes per second, Acros which is a 35 megabytes per second cable and FibraLink which has a 35 megabyte per second connectivity that was authorized in 2005.
Mr. Vargas continued to say the first 2 provide the link top to other global systems whereas the third and latest link only connects with Jamaica.
“Some of these initiatives could be operating within the first few months of next year and it is expected they’ll facilitate the Dominican Operators, with capacities in the order of 4,800 megabytes per second. That would at this moment represent a fundamental strongpoint for the country", concluded Mr. Vargas.

Commencing the first months of 2008 the Dominican Republic will start the procedure for a submerged fiber optic cable system with a 4,800 megabyte per second capacity. That is the measure interconnection. It will give the country a fast connectivity base to the whole world according to President of the Dominican Telecom Institute (INDOTEL) Mr. Jose Rafael Vargas.
