Business dynamics with the exportation of local produce
The DR has a famous saying "More Dominican than the plantian" - with this one of the largest staple foods is the plantian which could be made into mangú or tostones. For many years the Dominican plantain has been exported, but tostones and mangu and across the waves are now reaching a captive market overseas.2 years ago, the Calin House group started to export pre-cooked mangú plantain, tostones of plantains, tostones of green bananas, yucca and sweet potatoes. The company is adding value to local Dominican products and making the ease of cooking said products which retain their flavor and smell.
The general manager of Calin House Group, Jorge Luis Collado, said that the company has over 30 years working in the production of onions and garlic and 8 years in the prodcution of pre-cooked products.
Currently, two containers a month of pre-cooked products are exported to Puerto Rico generating sales of around US$2million dollars a year. Collado said that next year, the company plans to export to the United States in areas of New York, Boston and Miami and other states where there are many Dominican immigrants. "We are making contacts in Spain and the Netherlands to export there. We are sending samples, mainly mangú, so that the Dominican community can taste a little home from home"
In addition, The Calin House Group is one of the largest sellers of mangú, plantains and cassava in the country's main hotel areas, such as Bavaro, Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. They are pioneers in frozen products of this kind in the country and have adapted to the consumers needs.
The products are harvested on farms they own in Matanzas, Peravia, with more than 5,000 acres. All care and hygiene are taken into consideration at all costs during the production process. They also have employees and work with the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR) and have achieved the ISO 9001 certification.
Home precooked products Calín also found in supermarkets around the country, they are easily prepared, the mangú can be placed in "bain marie" or in the microwave, the tostones just need to be refried again and yucca only requires cooking for five minutes in boiling water.
