burger-king-krusty"I´ll have a Whopper, fries...and a beer please!" - Those words are no longer wishful thinking. Today (Jan 22, 2010) Burger King will unveil plans to sell beer and burgers at their new "Whopper Bar" - a new BK concept to compete with casual dining restaurants. The first is due to open in the heart of Miami´s South Beach area mid February 2010.

Don´t go looking for beer at BK´s conventional restaurants - that is not the plan - but more in "Whopper Bars" which will offer an assortment of BK´s world famous burgers, toppings, fries and beer. Plans are to open the bars in hot spots such as New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

This unusual move comes as the restaurant industry is reeling. Restaurant operators reported lower than usual sales in November 2009 compared with the year earlier. Nearly 65% of operators reported a same-store sales decline in November.

BK´s new Whopper Bar is not the first fast-food chain to test alcoholic beverages domestically in the US. Last year in Seatte, Starbucks opened "15th Avenue Coffee and tea, inspired by Starbucks" - beyond coffee and tea, it sells local beers and wines.

Because people think of BK as "Fast Food", BK are trying to edge their way into the fast casual dining arena with the Whopper Bar. BK are going after the under-30 crowd which their marketing people think is the industry´s future growth.
