British Airways strike looks set to go ahead
London, England - It looks like Union members representing British Airways cabin crew have announced that there will be 2 separate strikes during the remainder of March. The first is due to start on March 20 for 3 days, with the second from March 27 for 4 days. No strikes have been balloted for the Easter period, but further strikes could be called if deemed necessary.
BA´s losses in 2009 were in the hundreds of million dollars, and have responded by saying it is "extremely disappointed" with the union's decision but they would try and minimise disruption as much as they could. The industrial action is over planned changes to cabin crew conditions, which BA says will save the carrier more than US$91 million a year
Unite has said the planned changes call for working hours to be extended and crew levels to be cut, changes that it has said will damage customer service and the BA brand. The two sides have been holding talks to avoid strikes. BA management submitted a formal offer to the union which to date has not been accepted.
In December 2009, a high court judge blocked a planned 12 day strike that was due to run through the christmas period for the same reasons.
